Let’s take a big-picture look at what the Gospel of John says about the newness that Jesus brought into the world, and still brings us today.

Note for 2026: This six-week series will take us from the first Sunday of March to Easter Sunday.

Lesson 1: Jesus’ First Miracle

Jesus filled traditional ceremonial washing jars with wine of celebration. And when we follow him, he fills our lives will newness and celebration.

Lesson 2: Jesus & Nicodemus

Jesus came to do something new. Instead of saving Israel by condemning their enemies, he came to save all people. 

Scripture: John 3:1-18

Lesson 3: Love One Another

Religious Jews of the first century had visual indicators to let everyone know that they followed God. Jesus declares that our love for each other is what shows the world we follow him. 

Scripture: John 13:34-35, Matt 22:37-40

Lesson 4: Jesus Before Pilate

Jesus told Pilate that his kingdom is a new and different kind of kingdom, whose citizens are different from the rest of the world. 

Scripture: John 18:28-40 

Lesson 5: The Crucifixion

Even without the resurrection, Christ’s death was a triumph. The cross was a new kind of victory, whereby the forces of evil suffered a humiliating defeat.

Scripture: John 19, Colossians 2:14-15

Lesson 6: Easter Sunday: The Resurrection

Jesus is alive! And he was the first to undergo the resurrection that God has in store for all of those who follow him.

Scripture: John 20, 1 Corinthians 15:20-22
