What A Mess VBS
Sometimes Life Can Get A Little...MESSY!
Day 1: Who Made This Mess?!
Key Verse: "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23
Scripture: Adam & Eve, Genesis 3
Adam and Eve aren't just two people who lived long ago and far away. They are a representation of us every time that we choose to rebel against God by sinning. This place is a mess because of sin. And it is a mess that we can't clean up on our own.
Main Idea: Why is the world so messy?
Day 2: Jesus Loves A Good Mess!
Key Verse: "While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8
Scripture: Rich Young Ruler, Mark 10:17-27 & Genesis 3:21
The rich, young ruler was a special kind of mess. He is dramatic, arrogant, self-righteous, and hungry for attention. He even lies straight into the face of Jesus about how perfect and sinless he is. And how does Jesus respond? With love!
Main Idea: Jesus loves messy people.
Day 3: Confess Your Mess
Key Verse: "If we confess our sins, he will forgive our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:9
Scripture: The Sinner's Prayer, Luke 18:9-14
"Have mercy on me, God! A sinner!"
This prayer is juxtaposed to that of a self-promoting Pharisee, who claims to have it all together. God honors the prayer of the sinner, who desperately calls out his own inadequacy.
Main Idea: Let's be honest about sin.
Day 4: Address Your Mess
Key Verse: "See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!" 1 John 3:1a
Scripture: The Prodigal Son, Luke 15:11-22
Jesus died for the messiest version of you. He addresses your mess with love and grace, not harsh judgment. The father throws his royal robe over our sin-stained, tattered clothes, and covers us up in his grace.
Main Idea: His grace covers our sin.
Day 5: Address Their Mess
Key Verse: "Bear with each other and forgive one another as the Lord forgave you." Colossians 3:13
Scripture: Judging Others, Matthew 7:1-5
This messy world is full of messy people. How do we deal with the sins and hurtful behaviors of others; especially when they hurt us? We must forgive, just as Jesus forgave us. And forgiveness carries the weight of a sacrifice.
Main Idea: Forgive like Jesus.
